A Snapshot of Cartujano History and Carthusian Monks

All Andalusian horses trace to a small number of horses bred by religious orders in the 18th and 19th centuries. Famed for being the cornerstone of Andalusian horse breeding, some of the earliest written pedigrees in recorded European history were kept by Carthusian monks, beginning in the 13th century. The monastics were given the responsibility of maintaining these records because they could read and write and were responsible for horse breeding by certain members of the nobility, particularly in Spain.
