Open country riding in the land of white horses, black bulls and pink Flamingos

This is as authentic as it gets in these parts . Here, whether you're riding for the first time or you are an advanced rider, you can have a great time with these maniable, surefooted and responsive little horses. The short rides are appropriately tame and the longer ones provide opportunities for a faster pace and a nice gallop or two. Depending on the season, you and your horse will at times wade through belly deep water, gallop on the dried-up, cracked earth of the salt marshes or experience both.

Exceptional biodiversity of the Rhone Delta

Set in the middle of the Camargue Natural Preserve, with direct access to the Rhône-delta saltmarshes and their wealth of birds and wildlife, the Cabanes de Cacharel are uniquely situated to explore this mythical land the best possible way, on horseback. The vegetation here is mostly saltmarshes, reed beds and scraggly Tamarisk trees, with the sometimes crazy wind only adding to the feeling of wilderness.

The Horses

The Camargue horse is an ancient breed that has roamed this land in semi liberty for centuries, helping the local ‘Gardians’ manage the herds black bulls bred in their natural environment. Born black or brown, they gradually turn white at maturity, around 5 years old. These horses are quick, responsive and incredibly at ease in their environment. Their wide hooves are an evolutionary adaptation to the wetlands. On their backs, you can safely canter through mudflats and brackish water, effortlessly jumping up and down the natural embankments in their path.

A Paradise for Bird and Horse Lovers

Cacharel is the birthplace of the Camargue as a travel destination, where the mythical movie Crin Blanc (White Mane) was created. The current operators of the Cabanes de Cacharel make a point of showcasing their people’s traditions of horsemanship, cattle work and beautifully crafted saddles and tack. They have found a sustainable way of sharing their land, culture and natural resources with visitors.
