Travel back in time with us on a magnificent horse riding trip across the ancient Nabatean city of Petra, with its iconic historical sites and stunning sandstone cliff faces. Located in a scenic spot amid rugged desert canyons and mountains, this old city is a slice of prehistoric times that you can experience today in the most unique way possible - on the back of a horse!
The mysterious prehistoric Jordanian city of Petra was named as one of the new seven wonders of the world in 2007, with its grand archaeological sites and vibrant desert landscapes. The famous pink sandstone cliffs of Petra have even led to it being nicknamed as the “Rose City”. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains permeated with passages and gorges. This combined with the red, white, pink, and sandstone cliff faces makes for a uniquely beautiful landscape. Petra is also one of the world's richest and largest archaeological sites. It has a vast extent of elaborate tomb and temple architecture as well as extensive archaeological remains of copper mining, temples, churches and other public buildings. All of these remains are outstanding works of architecture and are a testament to the brilliance of the now lost Nabataean civilization. Our carefully curated horse riding trip will make sure to take you through this city and explore all the wonders of an ancient civilization.
All our horses are locally bred pure Arabian or Anglo-Arabian horses. They have a keen and generous character and great endurance and speed. You can be guaranteed not only of their striking beauty but also their intelligent and gentle nature. The cavalry consists mainly of mares and two geldings, most of which have been raised and trained by our expert guide and the team. We mainly use classic English saddles and simple bridles. We also use western saddle pads and saddlebags.
We ride around 25-35 km a day, meaning between 4 and 6 hours of riding per day. We usually leave quite early and ride around 2 to 3 hours in the morning, take a long break at noon (2-3h) to avoid the hottest hours, and again ride around 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon. The time spent riding and the rhythm of the ride depend on the weather, the level of the group and the horses. For this ride, you should be able to control your horse at all paces outside and be fit enough to endure long hours in the saddle.
